Property development dream comes true

9 February 2016

FORMER Griffith University student Rebecca Delay is well on her way to achieving her dream of being a property developer, thanks to property services group Oliver Hume.

The company this week presented Ms Delay with a $2,500 cheque as the 2015 recipient of its popular Annual Bursary Program, which aims to support the next generation of property developers.

Under the Program, Ms Delay worked two days a week as an assistant research analyst at Oliver Hume as part of a six-month internship in 2015. While working, she completed her third year of a Bachelor of Business with a double major in Logistics and Property Development at Griffith’s Gold Coast campus.

Following her graduation late last year, she accepted a full time position with Oliver Hume.

Ms Delay said she’d always had a passion for property.

“I’ve always been interested in what’s going on in the market,” she said.

“I’m always researching websites like RP Data and realestate.com.au to see what houses are renting and selling for. Ever since I was young, I’ve been working towards buying a house, which I finally achieved last year at the age of 19.’

She said working with Oliver Hume would be fantastic for her career.

“Working here at Oliver Hume, I’m getting so much knowledge and experience. I’m able to apply what I’ve learnt from my degree and build from there.”

Oliver Hume Joint Managing Director-Queensland Brinton Keath said the Annual Bursary Program aimed to develop and nurture talent in the property industry.

“Rebecca’s enthusiasm and interest in the industry was unmatched,” he said.

“The internship was an excellent opportunity for her to get some practical, on the ground experience in an exciting and growing industry.

“Last year’s Bursary recipient Sherifaye Jalloh gained valuable experience during her internship and is now working for Oliver Hume as a research analyst.

“We’re excited to now have Rebecca working with us full time.”

Griffith Business School's Dr Shane Barry, who is the discipline leader for the Real Estate and Property Development major, acknowledges the outstanding level of industry engagement the university has developed with Oliver Hume.

"Not only does Oliver Hume provide a paid internship and cash grant, but they also sponsor a Property Development Study Tour each year for all students undertaking their final year property course".

"Brinton and the team at Oliver Hume have been generous and collaborative industry partners to work with in providing great property industry opportunities and experiences for our students."
